What is MYOG?
MYOG stands for Make Your Own Gear, and it’s a movement that’s been gaining a passionate following since the 1990s. The roots of MYOG are in the ultralight backpacking movement, where it became a means to build equipment that was lighter and more minimalist than what was on the market at the time, allowing hikers to go faster and farther than before. The MYOG movement has since spread to other outdoor pursuits, and it’s not just about making things lighter or simpler anymore.
Why MYOG?
Here are just a few reasons to make your own gear for fly fishing:
- Make gear that you like. Colors, materials, designs – it’s all up to you!
- Make gear that’s custom fit to you.
- Build to suit your unique needs and wants.
- Build as simple or intricate as you like.
- Get the satisfaction of using your handmade gear on the water. Sort of like the way a fish caught with a fly you tied feels a little extra awesome.
- Most importantly, have fun! Just like fly tying is a fun hobby in itself, MYOG is a fun partner to fly fishing all the same.

About Me

I’m a lifelong angler with a love of fly fishing and wild trout. I’ve been a DIY guy for years, and I recently went head-long into MYOG. I noticed quickly that there wasn’t a lot of material out there for fly fishing MYOG projects, so I decided to change that. MYOG Angler is a passion project of mine with the goal of supporting MYOG in the fly fishing community. I hope MYOG Angler can provide some encouragement, spark some creativity, and foster some fun around MYOG in the fly fishing space.
Thanks visiting, and please consider connecting with me here and on social media. I would love to hear from you and find out what MYOG projects you would love to see and build.
Have fun out there!
Brandon
